A Recital of oboe and piano music at the University Club of Toronto

This is a light, informative, and engaging performance.

Repertoire to include Ricordo Di Napoli by Antonio Pasculli—the Paganini of the oboe—as well as music by Bach, William Grant Still, and Jeffrey Agrell.

The recital will be about 45 minutes.

Performers Biograhies:

Ron Cohen Mann, oboe

Ron is a frequent recitalist, new music proponent, orchestral musician, and teacher based in Toronto. Ron was named on CBC’s 30 Hot Canadian Classical Musicians under 30. Ron is a Howarth Artist and plays on a Howarth LXV-VT oboe.

Inspired by the variety of sounds and colours of the oboe, Ron is passionate about advancing the instrument as a solo voice in recitals and chamber music. Ron's solo debut at Carnegie Hall was with harpist Noël Wan, as featured artists in the Yale in New York series. At the Brott Music Festival, Ron performed as soloist for J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerti Nos. 1 & 2. Ron was a prizewinner at the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal Manulife Competition and the winner of the Yamaha Young Performing Artists Competition. A champion of new music and lesser-known solo music for the oboe, English horn, and oboe d’amore, Ron has been fortunate to premiere pieces by Jocelyn Morlock, Nicky Sohn, Matthew Emery, Liliya Ugay and Felipe Tellez. Ron is a recent addition to the Faculty of Music at Wilfrid Laurier University as Oboe Instructor.

Benjamin Smith, piano

Described as a “thoughtful and immensely exciting performer” with “scintillating technique” (Barrie Examiner), Chatham, Ontario native Benjamin Smith has performed as soloist and chamber musician across both Canada and the United States. He has been a laureate of numerous competitions, including the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition and the CMC Stepping Stone Competition. Solo appearances include the Stony Brook Symphony Orchestra, the New Juilliard Ensemble, the Ontario Philharmonic, Orchestra London, the Windsor Symphony, and the University of Toronto Hart House Orchestra. Festival appearances include Toronto Summer Music, Banff Summer Arts, the Guelph Spring Festival, the Long Leaf Opera Festival in Raleigh, NC, and Colours of Music in Barrie. Recent highlights include recitals in Chicago, Corpus Christi, and Carnegie’s Weill Hall with Canadian cellist Dongkyun An, with whom he will be releasing a recording later this year.
